Garbage Cans of Harrapa

Harrapan cities had garbage cans!

The Harrapans had many beautiful and sophisticated cities. So, to keep them beautiful and clean they invented the first sewage system, but do you know that they also had a garbage system?! Evidence has been found that Harrapan cities had brick garbage cans! Later, the garbage in the cans was dumped outside the city. I wish modern Indian cities learnt from these ancient cities. For more interesting facts about the Harrapan Civilization look at the 1st article in the post The Unicorn Seal, the Cradle of Civilization and the Mummy. I found this information in Subhadra Sen Gupta's book, Let's Go Time Travelling.

People ate dosas even in the 1st century AD too!

Dosa is a pancake made from rice flour and ground pulses, typically served with sambar (a lentil) and chutney. They were eaten in southern India in the 1st century AD, only that they were called ‘dosais’. There are verses praising the dosa in the 6th century AD Sangam literature too!

A Hindu couldn’t eat a banana on a Tuesday in British India!

In British India, the only literate people around were the Europeans and the Hindu brahmins. So, as the Brahmins were the only literate ones around, they were able to control the lives of the common and illiterate people. Some of their rules included not eating bananas on a Tuesday, girls not washing their hair on a Monday, not cutting your nails after sunset etc.

  1. Even today, Tamilians call Dosa as “ Dosai “ ☺️☺️

I noticed that most of the ancient customs, though looked weird, had a scientific reason behind customs like not cutting nails after Sunset. Why don’t we look more deeply into the old customs 🤔
