The East India Co. wanted to sell the Taj Mahal!

The East India Co. (E.I.C) was a British public trading company that started trading in eastern India. The E.I.C soon started conquering large parts of the Indian subcontinent, South-east Asia and China. However, did you know that the East India Co. wanted to sell the Taj Mahal?! In the 1830s, the Governor-General of India, Lord William Bentinck wanted to dismantle the Taj Mahal and sell its marble in London! Lord William Bentick got this idea in 1828, when he visited the Agra Fort in Agra and had the Shahi Hammam- the royal bathhouse demolished and had its marble sold too!
