We all use toothpaste everyday while brushing our teeth. Some
of the toothpastes we use include neem and other herbs and honey while some of our
toothpastes include sodium chloride and chemicals. But do you know what a
person living thousands of years ago would have used?
Thousands of years ago only nobility and royalty used
toothpaste. The ingredients of the toothpaste included things like powdered
deer antlers and cattle hooves, herbs like neem and honey. But this toothpaste
did not become a liquid as soon as the contents were
mixed, it became a powder
that only when mixed with water turned into a paste. This kind of toothpaste was
continued to be made till the end of the Middle Ages.

A similar kind of
toothpaste that we use today was only developed in the 18th century
by a French dentist named Pierre Fauchard. Pierre Fauchard invented a toothpaste
that was made of soap and lime that were used to make a paste, coral and shells
that were made into powder and an extract from the bark of the soapwort tree
that was mixed with water. All these ingredients were used to make toothpaste.
But this toothpaste could not be applied on a toothbrush, this toothpaste had
to be mixed in warm water and a sponge had to be dipped in it instead of a
toothbrush.
Today our toothpastes still have a few of the ingredients
that were used thousands of years ago like neem and honey. But most of
the ingredients that are there in our modern toothpastes have more chemicals
like glycerine, sorbitol, xanthan etc. So, the next time you are brushing your
teeth I hope you think about this post.
