When Mammoths Roamed In the Time of Pyramids

Mammoths were still there in the time of the pyramids!

We all know about the pyramids of Egypt, but did you know that mammoths also existed at the same time?! Mammoths were large, extinct ancestors of today’s elephants who lived at the end of the Ice Age. They were mostly brown in colour with a big, furry shaggy coat. The last mammoths were much smaller than their predecessors but looked the same. They lived on Wrangel Island, Russia at around the same time when the Great Pyramids of Giza were built! I wonder if the Egyptian pharaoh Khufu who ruled at that time had heard mammoths.

Romans used urine as a mouthwash!

The Romans were some pretty strange people using something they called a tersorium (don’t be fooled by its fancy name, its nothing but a sponge on a stick) to wipe their bottoms, but did you that they used urine as a mouthwash?! Urine contains something called ammonia, which is one of the best cleaning agents in the world. This why the Romans used urine as a mouthwash. Don’t try washing your mouth with urine at home or you may end up with diarrhoea!

Ashoka had a women's affairs minister!

Ashoka was the 3rd Mauryan emperor and under him the Mauryan empire rose to its peak. Ashoka had appointed some ministers that had never been known of before. One of these ministers was called stri-adhyaksha mahamatra, he was the one in charge of taking care of women. The minister was meant to help old women and widows and to help them find jobs. Ashoka was the first one to appoint such a minister.
