The Veggie Currency

Potatoes were used as a currency in Tristan da Cunha!

Tristan da Cunha is an island in the Atlantic Ocean between Africa and South America. This island is one of the most remote places on Earth, and has a population of only 270 people! But did you know that potatoes were once the currency of this island?! In the 19th century Tristan da Cunha was a very remote and poor island. And when some rats entered the island, they started destroying crops like wheat. So, now the islanders relied on only their livestock, peach and apple trees and potatoes. So, they started using potatoes as the currency. Potatoes continued to be the currency until the 1950s!
