The Polygar Wars were fought from 1799-1805 between the zamindars (landlords) of Tamil Nadu and the East India Co. The Polygar zamindars used a breed of dogs called Kombai to defend their forts. They also used another breed called the Rajapalyam hounds who were trained to sneak into the East India Company’s stables and bite the hamstrings (a muscle near the leg) of the horses so they couldn’t move! Looks like military dogs date back to the 19th century!
