Lemurs of Africa...or India?

Where would you expect the fossils of an ancestor of the lemur to be found, India or Africa? If you guessed Africa then you are right and if you guessed India you are right too! You must be wondering why the fossils of an ancient breed of lemur would be found in India. So, let me tell you why.

Until 200 million years ago Madagascar, Antarctica and Australia were one landmass. Meghalaya in north-eastern India was a stone's throw away from Perth, Australia and Mumbai, India had boundaries with Madagascar. Believe it or not these 3 landmasses joined together at Vivekananda Rock in Kanyakumari, India. This is why the flora fauna of Madagascar is much more closely related to that of India than Africa. Today coffee has become widespread drink around the world with 2 billion cups of coffee being drunk daily worldwide. However, did you know how coffee became such a widespread drink in the U.S.A?

During the American Revolution some revolutionaries in Boston climbed aboard British cargo ships docked in the harbour and dumped 342 chests full of British tea into the ocean. This event came to be known as the Boston Tea Party. To express their support to the revolutionaries the Americans started drinking coffee instead of tea.

Today the 'sandesh' is the most common Bengali dessert. However, did you know that the 'sandesh' has origins from the Portuguese cheese?!

In the 17th and 18th centuries many Europeans had settled down in India. One such settlement was Calcutta (Kolkata). Calcutta had a community of Portuguese settlers. The Portuguese used to eat various cheeses. Soon the Bengalis learnt how to curdle milk from them and started using them to make their own dishes like 'sandesh'. This is how the 'sandesh' was born.
